Word of the Day

update - /ˈʌpdeɪt/

Tuesday, 27 May 2014

In Hong Kong, "update" is used as an adjective. You might hear people say "The Galaxy S5 is very update" or something similar. This is wrong (sorry).

What you should say in this case is "The Galaxy S5 is very up to date".

As a verb, it is pronounced ʌpˈdeɪt (with the stress on the second syllable) and means to modernise or revise something. For example, you could update your Facebook profile.

As a noun, it is pronounced ˈʌpdeɪt (with the stress on the first syllable) and means new information, or a revision. When you write on your Facebook page, you are giving your friends an update on your life.
