Word of the Day

I'm afraid...

Monday, 16 March 2015

Sometimes you will hear (mostly Native) speakers say "I'm afraid..." Why are they afraid?

Well, as you probably guessed, they aren't actually afraid. What they mean is that they have some bad news for you. Imagine a telephone call:

Caller: "Can I speak to Mike?"

Other: "I'm afraid he's out. Can I take a message?"

If you have to give someone bad news, begin with "I'm afraid"!
