Word of the Day

outlook - /ˈaʊtlʊk/

Friday, 30 May 2014

In Hong Kong, "outlook" is used as a synonym for "appearance" or "style". Most Hong Kong people would find nothing wrong with "Her outlook is very smart".  This is wrong!

"outlook" actually has the following meanings (among others):

  1. A person’s point of view or general attitude to life
  2. The prospects for the future.

Some examples of "outlook":

  • "She has a sunny outlook" - She has a positive attitude
  • "The outlook is for rain" - It is expected to rain in the future time being discussed.
  • "The economic outlook is positive" - It is expected that the economy will improve.
